Testing of Cameras for Referees in the Premier League Begins This Weekend

  • The clubs of the Premier League supported the testing of cameras for referees.
  • The cameras will capture new angles for replays of match moments.
  • The technology aims to increase transparency in the work of referees.

The Premier League plans to conduct the testing of referee cameras in selected matches during the start of the tournament season. This decision received support from the clubs and television partners, such as Sky Sports and TNT Sports.

Cameras, known as Ref Cams, were first tested at the World Club Cup in the USA, where their usage exceeded expectations. After this, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved their usage in national competitions.

The introduction of these cameras will allow the transmission of replays of match moments from new angles, which can enhance the viewing experience for fans. The technology suggests that referees will wear cameras on their right side, while the video will be transmitted securely to broadcasters.

The Premier League has already conducted similar experiments earlier, but the new technology is expected to provide greater transparency in the referees' work, showing the complexity of their tasks during matches.

Previous testing at the World Club Cup showed positive results, and FIFA may approve the usage of cameras for the upcoming World Cup.
