The UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed serious concern regarding incidents of sexual violence that, according to him, are committed by Israeli military and security forces against detained Palestinians. In his annual report, Guterres warned that these forces could be included on a list of individuals who "are credibly suspected" of such crimes in the coming year.
The report mentions that it refers to incidents of gender-based violence, including rape and sexual abuse, that are carried out with the aim of intimidation. The Israeli envoy to the UN, Denny Danon, rejected these allegations, calling them baseless and urging the UN to focus on crimes committed by Hamas.
Guterres also expressed concern regarding actions by Russian forces, which, according to him, are teaching sexual violence against Ukrainian military personnel. He emphasized the "significant number of documented incidents" of violence in 50 official and 22 unofficial locations of detention in Ukraine and Russia.
The Secretary-General called on countries to adopt urgent measures to prevent violence and ensure access for UN monitors to verify the situation.
