Negotiations on the plastic agreement continue with new initiatives
- Negotiations on a global agreement regarding plastic are ongoing in Geneva.
- Environmental organizations are pushing for stringent measures.
- Activists are employing creative methods to draw attention.
In Geneva, negotiations are continuing on the first global legally binding agreement to combat plastic pollution. Participants are striving to reach a compromise, as the deadline approaches. Preliminary findings have shown that some countries are opting for a reduction in plastic production, while others are focusing attention on managing waste.
Environmental organizations, such as Greenpeace, warn that without stringent compromises, an agreement may not be achievable. "This is the first time in history an agreement on plastic is being discussed," noted a representative of the environmental group Juressa Lee.
During the negotiations, activists are using various creative methods to draw attention to the issues. For example, the Swiss organization Gallifrey Foundation distributed stickers, urging people to sign the agreement. Representatives of the Organization of American States received bracelets, showing their impact on chemical substances used in plastic production.
An exhibition on plastic, organized by the Global Fund for Nature, highlighted the scale of the problems. Greenpeace activists hung banners to showcase the impact of plastic pollution on the negotiations.
Currently, the question remains whether an agreement will be reached that focuses on reducing plastic production or managing waste. Experts warn that if no measures are implemented, by 2060 the amount of plastic on the planet could increase fourfold.
