Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a peace agreement with the participation of the USA

  • The USA facilitated the signing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
  • The corridor between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan is named in honor of Trump.
  • Iran expressed concern over the new corridor in the region.

On September 9, 2025, an important event for the Southern Caucasus took place in the White House – the presidents of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Armenia Nikol Pashinyan signed a peace agreement, which ended the prolonged conflict situation over Nagorno-Karabakh. The signing of the agreement took place under the patronage of US President Donald Trump.

This peace agreement provides for the creation of a transit corridor between Azerbaijan and its exclave Nakhchivan, which will pass through a 32-kilometer strip of Armenian territory. The corridor has been named "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity".

This project could significantly change the economic situation in the region, as the corridor will ensure greater trade connectivity between Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Europe. At the same time, for Iran, which is an important energy player, this poses a serious threat, especially since Tehran has close ties with Armenia.

However, Iran's reaction to the new corridor was not unequivocal. On September 9, the speaker of Iran's parliament, Ali Akbar Velayati, stated that Iran "will not allow the creation of this corridor." At the same time, Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized that the agreement takes into account Iran's interests and does not hinder its access to Armenia.

Experts note that the new corridor could become an important element in the strategic competition between Russia and the West. After the prolonged dominance of Moscow in the region, the agreement could mark the beginning of a new phase for the West, particularly the USA, which seeks to reduce Russia's influence.

However, the success of the peace process will depend on many factors, including the internal political situation in both countries. Pashinyan is expected to hold a referendum to amend the constitution of Armenia to ratify the agreement.
