The leader of Australian cricket calls for a change in the format of Test cricket

  • Todd Greenberg calls for a change in the format of Test cricket.
  • Uncertainty for banks in some countries due to demands for Tests.
  • Associations will receive more investment due to their significance.

The head of Australian cricket, Todd Greenberg, warned that the traditional calendar of Test cricket could pose a risk to the financial stability of some countries.

Greenberg believes that it is important to focus on quality rather than quantity to ensure the future of the red ball game. He noted that the International Cricket Council (ICC) recently formed a working group to discuss the format of Test cricket and the possibility of introducing a two-tier system.

Greenberg said: "The lack of Test cricket is our friend, not our enemy." He believes that not all countries are keen to play Test cricket, and this could be acceptable.

"We are literally trying to force countries to bank on playing Test cricket," he added. Greenberg wants such series, like Ashes between England and Australia, to attract more investment, especially since these matches hold great significance.

This summer saw an exciting series between England and India, which showcased Test cricket at its best. However, Australia won each of the three Tests in the West Indies by no less than 133 runs. New Zealand also easily won a series in Zimbabwe, winning one Test by an innings and 359 runs.

Greenberg emphasized the necessity of investing in those places where Test cricket has significance and appeal. "That's why Ashes will be such major and pivotal - because it holds significance."

The emergence of shorter formats of the sport has become a concern for Test cricket, especially since T20 leagues and The Hundred are offering lucrative contracts for players in domestic cricket, which further complicates the global calendar.
