Air Canada Cancels Flights Due to Possible Strike by Flight Attendants
- Air Canada began to cancel flights starting Thursday.
- The flight attendants' union issued a warning about a strike.
- The company is offering alternative travel options for its clients.
Air Canada is preparing for a potential suspension of its operations in connection with a possible strike by flight attendants. The company announced that flight cancellations will start on Thursday, and a complete suspension of flights is expected by Saturday.
In the meantime, the flight attendants' union, which represents nearly 10,000 flight attendants, issued a 72-hour notice of a strike. In response, the airline released a statement about a local outage.
Clients whose flights will be canceled will receive notifications and will have the right to a full refund. Air Canada also reported that it has signed agreements with other Canadian and international carriers to provide alternative travel options.
The General Director of Air Canada, Michael Rousseau, stated that the company is concerned about the possible disruption for its clients, especially those traveling abroad and domestically, which it serves.
Last week, the company announced the progress of negotiations with the union, as the parties remain far apart on the terms of the contract. The main issues, according to the union, are "low wages" for flight attendants and unpaid work when flights are not in the air.
The union rejected the company's proposal for a transition to obligatory arbitration, stating that it gives priority to negotiations, during which its members will be able to propose improvements.
