- The police encourage women to report instances of damage.
Surrey police are launching a new campaign in which female officers in sports attire will take on the role of runners to identify and apprehend individuals who are causing damage while engaging in sports on the street. This initiative started as a pilot project aimed at identifying the frequency of damage incidents, with which women encounter while they are involved in sports outdoors.
The operation lasted nearly a month and has already resulted in 18 arrests for such offenses as damage, sexual assaults, and thefts. Inspector John Veil noted that the survey indicated that the majority of female runners in one of the districts of the county did not report instances of damage to the police.
According to Veil, damage is a widely recognized issue. He emphasized that this is not an isolated criminal offense; such incidents can lead to more serious crimes. During the pilot, female officers encountered images and inappropriate gestures, which confirms the frequency of such incidents.
Officer PS Abbi Gayford, who participated in the campaign, stated that damage could be an indicator of potential future crime or simply a manifestation of unidentified behavior. She noted that their approach is to help people understand that their behavior is unacceptable.
As part of this initiative, the police also encourage everyone who encounters damage to report it to the police, utilizing accessible communication channels.
