Leaders Discuss Peace in Ukraine and Trump’s Meeting with Putin
- Trump's meeting with Putin aims at a ceasefire.
- Merkel emphasized the necessity to stop combat actions.
- Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine will not withdraw from Donbas.
On August 13, 2025, leaders of Europe and Ukraine held discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump. During a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin, German Chancellor Friedrich Merkel stated that any agreement regarding Ukraine should begin with a ceasefire.
Merkel stressed that legal recognition of Russian ownership in Ukraine is impossible. Meanwhile, Trump, as reported by French President Emmanuel Macron, expressed an intention to achieve a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia during his meeting with Putin.
Trump noted that territorial issues can only be discussed with the participation of Ukraine. He also hopes for the possibility of negotiations on a ceasefire, considering this a positive scenario.
In this context, there are suggestions that Trump may pressure Ukraine to accept an unfavorable agreement. President Zelensky, in response to the proposal regarding territorial exchanges, emphasized that Ukraine will not withdraw troops from the Donetsk region.
