Sportsmen Draw Attention to the Rise of Sports Betting
- Michael Porter Jr. expressed concern about the negative impact of betting on the game.
- Jontay Porter was banned for manipulation in games.
- Porter proposes to limit betting only on individuals in Las Vegas.
This is reported by ESPN, Marca.
Michael Porter Jr. expressed concern regarding the impact of sports betting on the game in the NBA. According to him, the increase in the number of bets negatively affects the integrity and enjoyment of the game. "Enjoyment from the game is no longer for the game," he noted on the program "One Night with Steiny." "This is for people to be able to make money. In fact, it seems that more people lose money than make it."
Porter's personal experience is linked to his younger brother, Jontay Porter, who received a ban from the NBA in 2024 due to manipulation in games for the benefit of players who placed bets. Jontay admitted that he left two games during the 2023-24 season to help his known teammate win bets related to his statistics.
Porter stated that players find themselves in a precarious situation with bettors, as there is always a risk of being caught cheating. "We really face the risk of death," he said, adding that his injury could lead to physical aggression from players who placed bets.
Porter proposes to limit sports betting only to individual bets in Las Vegas to reduce risks. "The entire system of sports betting... is flawed and will only get worse," he added.
In 2024, Americans legally placed bets on sports totaling nearly $130 billion, and the NBA is one of the largest betting leagues. This creates a pressure between the revenues from betting and the reputation of the league.
