Rory McIlroy declined the role of playing captain of the Ryder Cup
- Rory McIlroy indicated the possibility of becoming the playing captain of the Ryder Cup.
- He believes that balancing the roles of captain and player is impossible.
- Kegan Bradley, captain of the USA, is also considering this possibility.
Rory McIlroy, Masters champion, announced that he declined the opportunity to become the playing captain at the Ryder Cup in the future. He believes that balancing these two roles is impossible.
McIlroy, who is the leader of the European team, expressed his position, stating: "This idea has already been raised, but I immediately declined it, as I believe this would be very difficult." He emphasized that the current Ryder Cup has become significantly more complex than it was 20 years ago.
On the part of the players, the captain must perform many tasks that are not obvious to viewers, including organizing meetings with vice-captains and preparing promotions. "The captain can only play one session on Friday and one on Saturday, while a player who plays well may have more opportunities," he noted.
Now McIlroy is preparing for his eighth Ryder Cup, which will take place in Bethpage in the fall, where Europe aims to reclaim the trophy on American soil for the first time since 2012.
The captain of the USA team is Kegan Bradley, who is also considering the possibility of balancing the roles of captain and player, but according to McIlroy, this will be a challenge.
Currently, McIlroy is preparing for the first stage of the FedEx Cup, as he has already secured his place in the final tournament of the PGA Tour, but plans to participate in many other events until the end of the year.
