BALTIMORE — In the midst of court proceedings, a unique lawsuit was filed by the Trump administration against all 15 federal courts in Maryland regarding a ruling related to the deportation of migrants. The lawsuit has sparked controversy, as the administration claims that the courts are hindering the enforcement of immigration laws.

This lawsuit is part of the increasing tension between the executive branch and the judicial system. Judge Thomas Kallen expressed concerns about the legitimacy of such a move, noting that the administration could have chosen other means to challenge the ruling. He also inquired whether government lawyers had considered the possibility of filing appeals in specific cases.

The preliminary injunction, signed by Chief Judge George Russell, prohibits the deportation of migrants who have filed lawsuits regarding habeas corpus, pending the resolution of their cases. The government asserts that this violates its sovereign interests.

The lawsuit concerns not only legal aspects but also the principle of separation of powers between different branches of government. Court lawyers argue that the lawsuit is legal and assert that it seeks to limit the judicial system’s ability to review immigration cases.

Judge Kallen, appointed by Trump in 2020, promised to issue a ruling by the end of the workday regarding the possibility of extending the case. Should the lawsuit be allowed, he may also grant the government’s request for a prior injunction that would prevent Maryland courts from maintaining the conditions of Russell’s ruling.
