The USA is embedding trackers in AI chips to combat crime
- The USA is introducing trackers for detecting contraband chips.
- The trackers are embedded in the packaging of Dell and Super Micro servers.
- Since 2022, they are enforcing export restrictions on chips to China.
This is reported by RBC Ukraine, Mezha.
The USA is also introducing stricter monitoring in the shipment of servers with previous AI chips to detect illegal transfers of these chips to China, reports Reuters. According to anonymous sources, this allows the US government to take action against companies that violate export restrictions.
Trackers are usually embedded in the packaging, but it is unknown which specific sides install them and where they are located during transportation. In 2024, two trackers were detected in a shipment of Dell servers with NVIDIA chips.
Super Micro stated that it does not disclose its "best practices." Dell, for its part, confirms that it was not aware of any initiatives from the US government regarding the installation of trackers in its products. Since 2022, the USA has imposed export restrictions on previous shipments to China, although these restrictions are often circumvented.
In September 2024, it was reported about the arrest of two Chinese nationals who illegally transported AI chips, including NVIDIA H100, to China. Their activity is estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars.
