Fey-Fey Li Explains Approaches to Artificial Intelligence in Education and Security

  • Fey-Fey Li and Geoffrey Hinton discussed the role of AI
  • Li proposes utilizing AI for the development of critical thinking
  • Hinton emphasizes the need to build an element of partnership in AI

At the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas, Dr. Fey-Fey Li expressed her perspective on artificial intelligence (AI), stating that technology should not be a threat, but a partner in developing human potential. She highlighted the importance of empathy, adaptability, and accountability in the development of AI.

Li believes that the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI) is not separate from the concept of AI. She stressed that safe technologies must be based on local control, good design, and values that prioritize people first.

At the same time, Geoffrey Hinton, who also spoke at the conference, warned about the risks associated with artificial intelligence. He believes that AI could surpass human intelligence in the next 5-20 years and suggested building "material instincts" into AI models so that they align with human values.

Hinton noted that attempts to control AI could be misguided, as systems could bypass human limitations. He emphasized the importance of developing partnerships in AI as a means of security. Li, in turn, called for utilizing AI in education as a tool for stimulating adaptability and critical thinking.

Both experts agree that AI could have a significant impact on medicine, although Hinton does not believe that technologies will lead to immortality. Li, through her company World Labs, is developing AI for creating three-dimensional spaces that could enhance people's lives.

Each approach to AI, while different, focuses on ensuring that technologies serve humanity, rather than controlling it.
