New York Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Zelle Over Fraud

  • The lawsuit concerns fraud on the Zelle platform.
  • The Zelle company is accused of failing to provide adequate protection for users.
  • The New York Attorney General demands compensation for victims of fraud.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed a lawsuit against Early Warning Services (EWS), which manages the payment system Zelle. The lawsuit claims that Zelle did not ensure adequate protection for users against fraud, resulting in the theft of over $1 billion from 2017 to 2023.

Along with the lawsuit, EWS was aware of the vulnerabilities of the platform but did not implement measures to protect it. It was noted that registration with Zelle did not involve critical verification steps, which allowed fraudsters to use false email addresses to trick users.

The lawsuit includes examples of fraud, including instances where a Zelle user was forced to send money to a scammer posing as a representative of the company. It is also claimed that EWS did not respond to user complaints about fraud.

In response to the lawsuit, a Zelle representative stated that the company is fighting fraud and considers the lawsuit a political action that could lead to increased risks for consumers.

Attorney Letitia James demands compensation for affected users and the implementation of security measures on the Zelle platform.
