Observations of rabbits with black markings in Kolorado

  • Rabbits with black markings in Kolorado are caused by a virus.
  • The virus is transmitted through fleas and ticks, and does not spare humans.
  • Experts advise to avoid contact with infected rabbits.

In Kolorado, they are observing rabbits that have unusual black markings, similar to those of a hare, on their heads. This abnormality is caused by a virus known as the rabbit papillomavirus (CRPV). The virus affects the markings of fur-like traits on the heads and bodies of rabbits, which can lead to serious health problems.

According to experts from the Kolorado wildlife management, the virus is transmitted through parasites, such as fleas and ticks. Resident of Fort Collins, Syuzhen Mansfield, reported one of these rabbits, which returned with larger markings, regardless of the winter.

Although the virus is not harmful to humans and domestic animals, it can seriously impact the health of wild rabbits. In severe cases, the markings can lead to malnutrition, which results in starvation. Experts advise the population not to approach infected rabbits and report their observations to local authorities.

Currently, there is no treatment for CRPV, and the main recommendations focus on preventing contact with infected animals to limit the spread of the virus among wild rabbits.
