BBC presents commentary regarding Jenrick
- BBC has selected a statement concerning Jenrick.
- Jenrick stated that his words were misinterpreted.
- The situation occurred against the backdrop of protests against migrants.
BBC selected this after a participant in the Radio 4 program "Thought for the Day" called Robert Jenrick in "xenophobia". Theologian and author Dr. Krish Kandiah referred to Jenrick's statement, in which he expressed concern about the safety of his daughters, not wanting them to live alongside "people from distant countries who have illegally invaded Britain."
In response, Jenrick stated that listeners were told that if they were experiencing threats from illegal migrants, then they were being racist. In a statement, BBC emphasized that Dr. Kandiah's remarks were made in the context of a program where some language used exceeded acceptable limits, and the corporation took responsibility for its inclusion.
Among the comments made during the program, Dr. Kandiah noted that "fear of foreigners" is xenophobia, and that most people who cross the channel are fleeing war and persecution. He also emphasized that there is no evidence that migrants pose a greater threat to children than others.
After the translation segment, Jenrick published on social media that the presence of illegal migrants should not be considered racism, but rather a manifestation of good parenting. BBC temporarily suspended the program from access on BBC Sounds, while three speeches in it were edited.
This situation arose against the backdrop of increasing tension regarding the placement of asylum seekers in hotels, where migrants were residing, including after the call of an immigrant in a sexual crime.
