The Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced plans to support local exporters who have suffered from the 50% tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. According to Lula, the new program, called "Sovereign Brazil," provides financial support amounting to 30 billion reais (approximately $5.5 billion).
At a press conference on Wednesday, September 13, 2025, Lula emphasized that this plan is the first step towards assisting local entrepreneurship. The program includes a legislative project that will be presented to Congress, as well as other measures, such as the tax deferral for companies that have suffered from US tariffs.
Lula also noted that there is support in Congress that indicates the growing political unity around his leadership in response to Trump's actions. "We cannot afford to be nervous during a crisis. The crisis should be leveraged to create new opportunities," Lula stated.
At the same time, Lula responded to Trump's criticism regarding Brazil's judicial system, stating that under his presidency, there have been improvements in Brazil, and Trump was also under investigation. He rejected the US accusations of human rights violations in Brazil, asserting that the country adheres to democratic principles.
