Bakery Owners in Texas Found Guilty of Employing Illegal Workers

  • A bakery in Texas was found guilty of employing illegal workers.
  • The court proceedings lasted three days, with testimony provided by government agents.
  • Baez and Avila-Guehl continue to work until the verdict is rendered.

Two bakery owners from South Texas, Leonardo Baez and Nora Avila-Guehl, were found guilty of employing illegal workers in the U.S. The verdict was rendered in the middle of the week, following a traditional court process.

The accused, who have legal permanent residency in the U.S., were arrested in July along with several workers. This is a rare occurrence where business owners are charged with criminal offenses, rather than just facing fines.

Six of the workers could not obtain visas for deportation, while two remained in the country illegally. None of them had permission to work in the U.S. The workers lived in a room with six beds and shared two bathrooms in the same building as the bakery, according to federal testimony.

The court proceedings took place in Brownsville, a city on the border, approximately 20 minutes from their bakery in Los Fresnos. Presenters provided testimony from five government representatives, including an agent who was present during the discussion. The defense did not present any witnesses.

During the court proceedings, video was shown from interviews with two workers who were in the country without visas or work permits. Both workers stated that they were not detained against their will and that they received payment for their labor.

Baez and Avila-Guehl were allowed to return to work while awaiting the court's decision. When they reopened their bakery in April, the business received a steady stream of clients who came to support them. They remain free under the condition of the verdict being rendered, which is scheduled for November.
