The case of Jimmy Lai, a media magnate and democracy activist from Hong Kong, will conclude on September 14, 2025. Lai, who is 77 years old, is accused of colluding with foreign forces according to the national security law imposed by China.

Lai has been under custody since August 2020, and he faces a life sentence. The prosecution presented evidence to the court that pertains to his political connections in the USA, the UK, and Taiwan.

He is a founder of the newspaper Apple Daily, which was shut down in 2021 due to pressure from the authorities. Lai asserts that his publication supported democracy and freedom of speech.

During his testimony, Lai referred to himself as a "political prisoner". The judges reacted critically to this. In the case, Lai is also participating as a witness, claiming he financed the group "Stand With Hong Kong".

The Hong Kong government prohibits the accused from being prosecuted for politically motivated persecution. International organizations, such as "Reporters Without Borders", have called for Lai's release, highlighting his crucial role in defending press freedom in the region.

Lai, who has British citizenship, has also called for international solidarity to support him. The verdict in the case may be announced in July 2025.
