Lionel Taylor, one of the greatest receivers in the history of the Denver Broncos, passed away on September 6, 2025, at the age of 89 in his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This was reported by the team on September 13.
Taylor played for the Broncos for seven seasons from 1960 to 1966. He became the first player in professional football history to make 100 receptions in a season, setting the record in 1961. Over his career, he recorded 543 receptions, 6,872 yards, and 44 touchdowns, making him the leader of the team in these statistics.
Taylor was also the first African American quarterback in the history of the NFL, having obtained this position in 1980 with the San Diego Chargers. After finishing his playing career, he worked as a receivers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he won two Super Bowls.
The Broncos plan to honor Taylor during the upcoming game against the Arizona Cardinals next Saturday.
