Increase in cases of chikungunya virus transmitted by mosquitoes

  • Significant increase in cases of chikungunya virus in Great Britain.
  • The first cases of the virus were detected in travelers from Brazil.
  • It is recommended to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites during travel.

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), in the first half of 2025, 73 cases of chikungunya virus were recorded, which is higher than double the figures from the previous year. All cases were linked to travel to India, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius.

Chikungunya is a virus that is transmitted through mosquito bites and causes fever and joint pain. In most cases, people recover within a few weeks, but in some cases, symptoms, including joint pain, can last for months or even years.

The agency emphasizes the importance of taking precautions during travel. It is recommended to use repellents, wear long sleeves, and sleep under treated mosquito nets.

Additionally, UKHSA reported the first cases of the oropouche virus, which is also linked to travel to Brazil. This virus, which is usually transmitted through mosquito bites, causes symptoms similar to flu, such as headache, joint pain, and fever.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), from 2024, an increase in cases of oropouche virus is expected in many countries of South America and the Caribbean region.
