Trump controls the Washington police during a rise in violence
- Trump announced the control of the Washington police for 30 days.
- Protesters express dissatisfaction with the increased police presence.
- Crime in the city has decreased, but Trump speaks of an extraordinary situation.
Washington (AP) — President Donald Trump announced the temporary takeover of the Washington police, in the District of Columbia, following an increase in crime in the city. Along with the information, Trump activated the National Guard and increased the presence of federal agents on the streets to bolster security.
On Wednesday, September 14, 2025, residents of one of the districts of Washington protested against the increased police presence. They expressed dissatisfaction, blocking officers from entering their area. Protests took place after the White House confirmed that federal agents would patrol the city continuously.
Trump stated that he plans to continue control over the police and may turn to Congress for authorization to do so. He also hinted at the possibility of declaring a state of emergency to continue the control.
The Washington police, led by Chief Pamela Smith, stated that despite the increased presence of federal services, crime in the city has actually decreased to a level not seen in 30 years. However, Trump insists that the situation requires a term intervention.
During the first days of the new policy, federal and local law enforcement agencies conducted over 100 arrests, but some local officials believe that this reaction is excessive and does not reflect the real state of affairs.
